Jean Steinhardt's House Portraits

"Every house has a story ... A house portrait helps you tell it."

427 Marble Mill Road, Marietta, Georgia
Home in which Gwen Harris Nesmith grew up
Commissioned by Troy & Michelle Nesmith as a gift to his mother Gwen.
Original drawing by Jean Steinhardt (b. Iowa City, Iowa, 1948)
8"x11.5" Graphite on Aquarelle Arches Watercolor Paper, Cold Pressed 100% Cotton, 140 lb (300 g/m2)

When this home was sold, circa 1990, it was demolished to make way for commercial use. It was located within sight of Kennesaw Mountain, where the Harris and Nesmith kids used to climb when they were growing up.

The site was the scene of a Civil War skirmish. Troy’s Uncle Mark would use a metal detector to search the front yard for metal artifacts and discovered a number of bullets and other items from that era.

A photo of the home appeared in a political ad in the Marietta Daily Journal, Monday 23 August 1960, Page 2
The ad headline was: “Another Of Many Reasons For Re-Electing Herbert C. Mccollum Commissioner”
Photo caption: “One Of Many Roads Constructed During The Past 4 Years By The Present Administration”

Featured in the drawing is Troy’s dog, which he named “Dark.”

One of many anecdotes … Troy’s grandfather had a dog that roamed the countryside during the day. When it was time for him to come home, his grandfather would go into the back yard and fire a shotgun into the air. His dog, hearing the blast, would come tearing back home.
